There are a lots of things you can do to kill bed bugs from your
environment as well as limit the exposure:
1. Wash all bedding weekly in hot water, not warm.
2. Use synthetic pillows and replace once a year.
3. Put comforter in a cover, so all you have to do is wash the cover.
4. When you vacuum or clean, wear a dust mask during the time and
for at least one hour afterwards to let stuff settle again.
5. Keep house humidity between 30-50 % ideally. On the east coast here, it
is too expensive energy wise to keep the humidity below 70 % in the
summer. Get a humidity meter.
6. Cover pillows, mattress and box spring in her bedroom with cases.
7. it is recommended to remove carpet, and drapes
from bedroom.
8. Any stuffed toys ypu, teddy bear, etc., should also be washable in
hot water.
There are also air purifiers that are very good. One type
has
what they call a hepafilter. It is supposed to be
a filter with very small pores that will filter out bed bugs
and other small particles. It also has a large surface area so
supposedly it can pass a lot of air and last a relatively long time. There are vacuum cleaners that have hepafilters attached. The
result is that the bed bugs and other small particulates are
trapped in the hepafilter and not blown back into the room.
Then you need plastic covers on pillows, mattress and
any box springs. The only time you need new bedding is
if you are going to replace non-washable bedding. All
bedding not enclosed in plastic covers needs to be washed
every two weeks in hot water and dried on a hot setting.
Same goes for curtains in the bedroom etc. Any place
that you spend as much time in as in the bedroom should
get similar treatment and the upholstery should be
non-friendly to bed bugs build up.
