Bed bugs do not necessarily live in your mattress, they can live in
the walls, under the carpet, in the base boards, in picture frames
even.
Not everyone reacts to bed bug bites. You can be bitten and not even
know it because your body reacts differently than others.
Bed bugs look kind of like flax seeds if they have fed and they are
an adult. Babies, like I saw last night, are small and white/clear if
they have not fed.
You cannot control bed bugs alone, you must call in a professional. The
reason for this is the poison that kills them cannot be obtained
without a license.
Remember bed bugs can come back months after treatment, make sure you
get a company who does a really good job, not just a one time
treatment to the mattress and baseboards, but really gets down to the
nitty gritty.
And most important:
If you find one your first reaction will be to kill and dispose.
Please refrain from doing this. If you find one, keep it in a tupperware or zip lock bag. The professional will need to see it to
do a proper identification. There are a couple other bugs that look
almost exactly like bed bugs, like bat bugs for instance, and without
properly identifying the bug, the treatment may not be as effective.
Bed bugs usually leave their holes in the small hours of the morning and
pierce the skins of their sleeping victims, and proceed to feed on an
enormous quantity of blood. This explains why they do not need to feed very
often.
When bed bugs have eaten, they are too swollen to re-enter their cracks, so
they slim down rapidly by excreting the water content of the blood they have
just eaten.
This secreted water, often mixed with the digested remains of the previous
meal, accounts for the black stains on bedding and walls, by which the
presence of bed bugs, can be detected.
Remember, once you know that you have bed bugs, eradication is difficult,
and professional treatment will be required.
