Down materials are not recommended for those suffering
from allergies to bed bugs, and asthmatics who suffer from bed bugs allergens
should use synthetic bedding materials for pillows, blankets, etc.
The 300 count cotton barrier sheets do work (as do the vinyl/plastic
coverings), though not perfectly, but as long as they are carefully
gathered (folding inward with deliberate, slow motions so as to not disturb
the particles in them into the breathing space - the air), laundered in very
hot water (the consensus is 130 degrees F., but some say much higher - 158
degrees F.) weekly, homeowners remove dust from the indoor environment as
best as possible, and control humidity, the bed bugs populations can be
controlled.
Successfully controlled means less allergen for potential allergic
reactions, and less chance for an asthma attack brought on by breathing in
bed bugs allergens. It is estimated that 50% to 80% of all asthmatics are
allergic to bed bugs allergens by various organizations. If bed bugs can be
controlled, there are less allergic reactions, so less asthmatic attacks, so
less drugs are needed, and the allergic/asthmatic person is able to enjoy a
better quality of life.
There are many control measures for bed bugs. The most common allergen caused
by bed bugs is in their feces, and also in their dead bodies and parts; it is a
protein used in their digestive system, known as "Der.p.1".
Bed bug allergic stuff animals:
Extreme temperature can kill the bed bugs, all bedding and lightweight
curtains in the allergic persons bedroom should be washed in Hot (140 F)
water and dried on high heat settings also. For children who can't, won't or don't want to give up favorite stuffed
animals that cannot be washed, there is an answer - seal the stuffed animal
up in a zip lock plastic bag or something along those lines and freeze it
for 3 days, any bed bugs contained within will be dead bed bugs.
